The York County Regional Chamber of Commerce launched a new shop local campaign Thursday with the slogan "Buy Into It! York County."
"We want people to remember to shop locally during the holidays," said Rob Youngblood, president of the chamber of commerce. The campaign will continue past the holidays.
The chamber launched a similar initiative last year, touting the improvements at the Interstate 77 interchange at Dave Lyle Boulevard and the new stores at the Rock Hill Galleria.
This year's campaign focuses on small businesses, who told chamber leadership they want more promotion of local shopping.
The campaign includes commercials in the local media.
Most of all, however, it will rely on the clerks and other store personnel to make it successful, Youngblood said.
"We want this to help our local economic development," he said.
"This will help the people who work locally and, hopefully, they will spend their wages locally, too," he said.
Other shop local campaigns are under way. The Lancaster Chamber of Commerce launched its "Think Lancaster First" campaign in September.
Successful shop local campaigns have increased holiday sales by as much as 2 percent, according to research by the Institute For Local Self Reliance.
