The Clover Dixie Minors All-Stars won last week's subdistrict tournament, defeating the York All-Stars 10-0 before a large crowd at the York Recreation Complex.
Clover used the same formula that proved to be successful in defeating Chester 9-2 and York 12-1 in previous tournament games -- strong pitching and solid defense.
The game was closely played until the Clover was able to pull away in the middle innings.
After the game, head coach Butch Lindsay expressed a sense of accomplishment and relief.
"We beat a good York team," observed Lindsay. "It was the most nervous I've been for a game in my seven years of coaching."
Said Lindsay of the opposing pitcher, "York's Mitch Trotter is awesome."
Lindsay said the Clover players were ready for the challenge of winning a tournament championship.
"Our players were excited, high-fiving and chest-bumping during the game," he added.
Lindsay said he's built his Clover Dixie Minors team around Noah Lindsay, Timmy Marcelli, Kevin Wade, Hunter Hamrick and Justin Gigg the last four years.
"Today against York, everybody hit the ball," noted Lindsay. "They all contributed."
Though he was pleased with the team's hitting, Lindsay said much time is spent on the fundamentals of the game.
"We build our success around defense," he said. "You have to play solid defense to win, regardless of the sport."
Despite losing to rival Clover, the York All-Stars defeated Rock Hill twice to reach the final pairing.
Trotter struck out nine batters in a 1-0 win over Rock Hill and Alan Jackson struck out 12 as York prevailed, 5-0.
"We have great kids," York head coach Brian Beverly said after the game. "We played good defense in the tournament and missed a couple in the field today.
"We started slow and hit the ball right at a player several times."
Beverly said the York players had two weeks of practice leading up to the tournament.
"We had a lot of leadership on the team," he said. "They played as one."
Meanwhile, the Clover All-Stars are competing in the Dixie Minors District Tournament at Union this week. They won their first game Monday, beating Lockhart 16-3.
