Barely a day old, Makayla Paige Bailey has already managed to surprise her mother twice.
At 6 pounds, 7 ounces, Makayla was the first delivery of the new year at Piedmont Medical Center, surprising her mother Shannon Lee, who had expected an earlier birth on New Year’s Eve.
“I guess she was waiting for 2014,” said Lee, 28, who went into labor Tuesday afternoon. The labor unexpectedly stopped, Lee said, and then turned into a waiting game until Makayla was born at 10:11 a.m. Wednesday.
The single-mother who lives in York has three other children aged 5, 9, and 11.
But the delayed birth wasn’t the first time Makayla had given her mother a shock.
Lee found out about the surprise pregnancy in May while in the hospital after a serious car wreck left her with four cracked ribs and collapsed lungs.
“It was a big ‘ole whammy,” Lee said of the double shock of the crash coupled with the news that she was two months pregnant.
The Columbia wreck was so bad that it flattened the side of the Honda that Lee was in and sent her to intensive care where she stayed for several days to recover.
One of Lee’s ribs was still cracked during the delivery.
