YORK The York Little Cougars Youth Football Association opened registration this week for 2014 football and cheerleaders.
The Little Cougars Association will be fielding football team and cheerleader squads for ages 5 to 12 in four age divisions: 6U, 8U, 10U and 12U. Registration will continue through April 25.
The York Little Cougars is a second-year member of the Southland League, one of the best leagues in the Carolinas, and will be riding the coattails of its successful first season.
Practice is slated to begin Aug. 1, during which youth participants will learn to play competitive football in a fun and safe environment. Participants will also be taught the importance of family, education and teamwork.
Parents wishing to register their child can pick up a registration packet at American National Insurance, 47 N. Congress St. in York. The packets are available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
Registration packets also are available at Sharon Town Hall, 4025 Woodlawn St., Sharon, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
YCHS boys’ soccer team shuts out Chester
YORK The York Comprehensive High School boys’ soccer team defeated Chester 5-0 before the home fans last week at the YCHS stadium.
Benji Amezcua scored two goals for the winning Cougars, the first unassisted and the second on an assist from teammate Buddy Anderson.
Anderson was also active in the win over the Cyclones, scoring the Cougars’ first goal on an assist from Hayne Wilkerson in addition to the assist to Amezcua.
Rounding out the scoring for the Cougars, Elias Ennis booted the ball through the net, assisted by Wilkerson; Tripp Blackwell closed out the scoring, assisted by Josue Alvarado.
Lady Cougars softball team loses nail-biter
YORK The York Comprehensive High School girls’ softball team opened March 11 at Rock Hill, where the Lady Bearcats prevailed 8-7 in a down-to-the-wire nail-biter.
“We lost a heartbreaker,” said York head coach Susan Lee Sandifer. “We were up 7-5, then Rock Hill scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the win. We got behind early and came back in the sixth. We had a few costly errors in the seventh.”
The Lady Cougars showed plenty of offensive punch, with Brooke Andrews leading the way with three hits in five at-bats. Taylor Wilkerson was 2-for-4, including a double. Marissa Jackson and Nora Childers also doubled.
In a previous game, York also lost to Fort Mill 8-3 at home. But the Lady Cougars finished strong, scoring all three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Clover golf team defeats Northwestern
CLOVER The Clover High School boys’ golf team opened the 2014 season with a win over the Northwestern Trojans at River Hills Country Club.
The Blue Eagles won handily with a cumulative score of 174 to Northwestern’s 195.
Clover’s Spencer Walker and Austin Walker shared co-medalist honors with rounds of 42. The Blue Eagles also had steady play from Andrew White and Harrison Parrish with rounds of 43 and 47, respectively.
Hall earns medalist honors for York golfers
YORK The Rock Hill High School boys’ golfers defeated York with a team score of 179 to the Cougars’ 190 in Region 3-AAAA action at Rock Hill Country Club.
York’s Austin Hall claimed medalist honors with a 41. Tucker Laney had the next best score for the Cougars, finishing with a 48. Tyler Ellis shot 50, and Chandler Sain finished at 51.
The Cougar golfers also were beaten by South Pointe 152-177. Laney, Sain and Chayce Blackwell each had rounds of 44. Hall was next with a 45.

York boys, girls basketball camp dates set
YORK The York boys and girls basketball camp for ages 5 to 15 will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 23 to 26. The cost is $60 per child.
Participants can learn the game from varsity boys and girls Cougar basketball players and coaches.
