Optimists serving barbecue April 5
CLOVER The Clover Optimist Club will sell barbecue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5 near the Killians Service Center on S.C. 55.
Pork plates cost $8 and include barbecue, slaw, chips cookies and buns; $1 from each plate goes to Lee Killian’s Medical Fund. A 5-pound bucket costs $30. Sandwich with chips costs $4. Drinks are $1.

The club will host its annual youth oratorical contest at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29. Children will be asked to write and speak on the topic, “How my passions impact the world.” The contest is open to all youths younger than 19. Parental permission is required.
The contest will be at the Clover Optimist Club, 1500 Tom Joye Road, Clover. Entrants should bring a copy of their speech, a copy of their birth certificate and the application.

Meal delivery volunteers needed in Clover
CLOVER The York County Council on Aging is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to frail, home-bound seniors in Clover. The immediate need is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The route takes about one hour to one hour and 15 minutes to complete.
Those who would like to sign up to deliver meals or have questions should call Patty Teeter at the Clover Senior Center at 803-222-9286.
Volunteers deliver a hot, nutritious lunch and provide a brief period of companionship to seniors, many of whom are isolated. The council provides meal delivery throughout York County to seniors.
GOP group to focus on U.S. Senate races
LAKE WYLIE The Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club will hold a “Red to the Roots” town-hall style luncheon meeting to talk about South Carolina’s 2014 electoral cycle on March 28 at the River Hills Country Club. Emphasis will be on U.S. senatorial races.
Wes Climer, chairman of the York County Republican Party, will serve as the moderator. A question and answer segment will follow the presentations.
The South Carolina Republican Party “Red to the Roots” campaign has as its focus the election of more Republicans to local office.
The meeting begins with social time at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and speaker forum at noon. Cost is $18 per person. To reserve your seat with or without lunch, call 803-831-1814 by March 25.
CACC plans April 24 gala
CLOVER The 11th annual gala to benefit the Clover Area Assistance Center on April 24 will be a salute to old-time Hollywood.
The event at Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont, N.C. will feature a buffet dinner, open bars, silent and live auctions and a Clover High School Choralier tribute to Hollywood music. The cost will be $100 per person, limited to the first 200 guests.

Choral society plans concert
ROCK HILL The York County Choral Society and Chamber Singers, with the Winthrop Chorale and Chamber Singers, will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at Byrnes Auditorium, Winthrop University.
They will present Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem,” a secular cantata featuring the Civil War poetry of Walt Whitman. Soloists are Kristen Wonderlich, soprano, and Jeffrey McEvoy, baritone.
Also featured will be music by Vaughan Williams’ British predecessors, contemporaries and successors. All groups are under Katherine Kinsey, director of choral activities at Winthrop University and artistic director of the choral society. Women’s club holding game lunch
CLOVER The Clover Woman’s Club will hold a Downton Abbey card and board game luncheon at 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Clover School District Office, 604 Bethel St.
Costumes are encouraged, but not required.

Tour of homes planned
LAKE WYLIE The 2014 Clover-Lake Wylie Tour of Homes and Gardens will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26, sponsored by Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women.

5K race planned for Relay for Life
YORK The Stars of Hope Relay for Life team of First Baptist Church in York will sponsor a 5K Hippity Hoppity Hope Easter run/walk.
The event, a benefit for the American Cancer Society, will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 12; the route will begin at the church and go through a residential part of York.
Early packet pickup will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 11 in the church fellowship hall. Race-day registration and packet pickup will be from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.
