The York Comprehensive High School girls’ soccer team ended the season with a hard-fought 5-0 loss to the Nation Ford Lady Falcons Friday at the YCHS stadium.
A special Senior Night recognition ceremony was held before the Region 3-AAAA game.
The Lady Cougars battled the visiting Lady Falcons with tenacity, but Nation Ford was able to pull away in the second half to secure the win.
YCHS coach Dave Prescott lauded senior team members. “Our seniors really stepped up this season,” he said. “They showed a lot of leadership.”
Skylar Sims, a four-year soccer participant, was among the seniors reaching out to the less experienced players on the team.
“It’s bittersweet,” the senior stalwart said of her final game in a Lady Cougar uniform. “I will miss it.”
Sims, a two-sport athlete who contributed to the girls’ basketball team as a perimeter shooter, said her first love is soccer.
“I have a passion for soccer,” she said. “It’s the sport I love.”
She said her senior season has gone by too fast. “I wish I could restart everything,” she said with a grin.
Prescott said all of the players showed a strong work ethic. “They work hard and practice hard,” he said. “The kids are building for the future. They are awesome.”
Prescott sees a promising future for the YCHS girls’ soccer program.
“Our JV team has been playing well,” he said. “The York Middle School program is sending players to the high school program.”
