York FFA honors members with awards
YORK The York FFA honored students during its annual banquet May 6, attended by members, parents and school and district administrators.
A dinner was catered by the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center culinary arts program, led by chef Judy Brown.
Guest speaker was Shelby Wayne of McBee. Wayne is a senior at McBee High School and is serving as South Carolina FFA state secretary.
York FFA student gets $1K scholarship
YORK Ashley McCarter, a member of the FFA at the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center in York, has been named the recipient of a $1,000 AGCO scholarship given through the National FFA Scholarship Awards program.
She is one of 11 South Carolina members to be awarded a National FFA Scholarship in 2014. In 2014, the National FFA Organization awarded $2.2 million in scholarships.
Scholarships are sponsored by businesses and individuals through the National FFA Foundation and are given for a wide variety of experiences, career goals and higher education plans.
Clover High AFJROTC named distinguished unit
CLOVER For the eighth consecutive year, the Clover High School outstanding Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps has been named a Distinguished Unit with Merit.
The 2013-2014 award recognizes Air Force Junior ROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations and have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing better citizens for America.
The award acknowledges the personal growth of the cadets, contributions of the instructors as mentors and the support of the school and local community.
The distinguished units represent the best of the 863 AFJROTC units worldwide and only five schools in South Carolina received the honor. Aerospace Science instructors are Chief Louis Csencsits and Maj. Brian Batson.
Clover senior gets agricultural honor
CLOVER Logan Cogdill, a Clover High School senior, was recently presented with the school’s highest agricultural honor, the Dekalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award, sponsored by the Monsanto Co.
Cogdill, daughter of Wendell and Tammy Cogdill of Lake Wylie, received the award for excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work experience. She obtained her state FFA degree, attended the Commissioner’s School for Agriculture and was named outstanding senior for her FFA chapter.
Kelsey Anderson is her agricultural instructor at Clover High School. As the winner of the 2014 award, Cogdill’s name will be recorded on a permanent plaque displayed at CHS.
The Dekalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award is marking its 67th anniversary. More than 168,000 high school seniors from across the country have received the award which is symbol for excellence.
Monsanto is a long-time supporter of agricultural education, FFA, 4-H and other farm youth organizations and initiatives.
York Intermediate names Cool Cougars
YORK York Intermediate School has named Cool Cougars for May. They are: Team 6-2, Olivia Brady and Will Culp.
