Clover Senior American Legion Post 38 fell to Greenville 11-0 in the opening round of the playoffs Monday night in Greenville.
“They took charge early and built the lead,” said Post 38 head baseball coach Hank Wofford.
Greenville Post 3 scored the bulk of its runs in the first three innings to seal the win.
“They only out-hit us 8-7, but we didn’t take care of the ball, and you have to throw strikes,” said Wofford.
“I told the kids it’s a long series (best-of-five). We’re at home Tuesday. If we could put together a couple wins and return home Thursday, anything can happen. We would have the opportunity to advance in the playoffs.”
Wofford said he hopes the Post 38 team will get on the scoreboard early in the remainder of the series and not fall behind in the early innings.
Post 38 players had hefty batting averages entering this week’s playoff games. Chase Goldberg’s .529 is among the highest in the Upstate; he also leads the team in RBIs, with 18.
Cody Payne batted .354 for the regular season with 11 RBIs. Corey Paraham batted .326 with eight RBIs for the season, and Davis McCarter batted .323 and also had eight RBIs.
Rounding out the Post 38 batters with .300-plus batting averages, Justin Rayano stood at .313 and Hunter Hurst was batting .308.
Hurst has the lowest ERA among the Clover pitchers, at 1.81, with Justin Adams at 2.33, Barrett Courtwright 3.65 and Jonathan Brakefield at 4.44.
The Clover Post 38 Junior Legion team lost to Aiken 5-0 on Monday night at Aiken. Head coach Garrison Clinton’s Clover team was scheduled to host Aiken on Wednesday in the best-of-three series.
The Post 38 Senior team’s Tuesday home game and the Clover Junior Legion team’s Wednesday home game were played after this week’s Enquirer-Herald deadline. Results and summaries will appear in next week’s Enquirer-Herald.
