The York Parks and Recreation Department continues to accept registration for fall youth activities.
The cost to register is $35 for youth football and cheerleading and $30 for flag football participants.
The regular deadline is Aug. 22. Late registration is Aug. 22 and 25, with an additional $10 fee included.
York Parks and Rec Director Carolyn Leake encourages local youths to sign up for fall sports.
“Youth football, cheerleading and flag football are popular events,” Leake said. “We anticipate a good turnout this season.”
Registration is at the York Recreation Center on White Rose Lane from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Fridays.
Youth football is divided into two age groups: ages 7 to 9 and ages 10 to 12. A child’s league age is determined by the child’s age as of July 31, 2014.
League-age 10-year-olds are required to play with the 10- to 12-year-old group regardless of their weight. League-age 7-year-olds have the option of playing flag football or youth football without weight restrictions, which must be decided at the time of registration.
Cheerleaders will be placed on squads based on the number of youth football teams; however, because there are not enough cheerleaders to divide the squads into the same age groups as the football teams, cheerleaders may cheer for a team in a different age group than the cheerleader.
Registration also is underway for fall gymnastics, to begin Sept. 4 at the York Recreation Center.
“It’s good to see fall gymnastics is returning this fall,” said Leake. “We’re glad our instructor is back. The fall gymnastics class is a popular program that reaches a lot of kids.”
Thursday-afternoon classese are: Tumbling, 5-5:45 p.m., ages 4 to 7; and basic gymnastics, 6-7 p.m., ages 8 to 13. The cost is $30 per month for tumbling class and $35 per month for basic gymnastics.
A discount of $5 per child in the same household will be given for multiple siblings.
“Class space is limited to only 20 participants per class,” said Leake. Registration for gymnastics is on a first-come-first-paid basis.
Free play continues to be a popular activity at the York Recreation Canter gym on White Rose Lane. “We’ve had good response to the free play sessions,” said program assistant Priscilla Cook.
Gym hours for ages 18 and older are 10 a.m.-noon and 1-2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Other free-play hours include:
3-5 p.m. Monday, ages 17 and younger; 3-4 p.m. Tuesday, 17 and younger; 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, all ages; 3-5 p.m. Thursday, 17 and younger; 3-5 p.m. Friday, 17 and younger; 2-6 p.m. Sunday, all ages.
In addition, outdoor basketball courts are available at Lincoln Park, New Street Park, Green Street Park and Magnolia Park.
