Clover’s White, York’s Smith advance to state
YORK COUNTY The York County chapter of the S.C. Junior Golf Association held all-star tournaments Aug. 11-12 at Springfield Golf Club, with the top two finishers in each age group advancing to the state championship.
The state event will be Aug. 23-24 at Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six.
Clover’s Andrew White won the 13- to 14-year-old boys’ division, carding a two-round total of 79-76-155. He held off Rock Hill’s Nicholas Mayfield by two strokes, though both are headed to Ninety Six this weekend.
York’s Sarah Smith won the girls’ 14- to 18-year-old division, shooting 82-81-163 en route to a four-stroke victory against second-place Alyssa Campbell, who shot 83-83-167.
Zach Adams won the state berth for 10- to 12-year-old boys. He shot 38-32-70 to win by five strokes. Rock Hill pair Zachary Reuland and Payne Gettys went to a playoff after both carded 75s, and Reuland won to take the second state-championship spot.
Rock Hill’s Coble Panetti won the boys’ 15- to 18-year-old division by 10 strokes, shooting a pair of 71s for a two-round total of 142. He bested Rock Hill’s Miles Baldwin, who shot 77-75-152 to finish second.
Automatic state-championship berths went to Katie Warner and Amber Bellamy (girls, 11 to 13), Molly Hardwick (girls 8 to 10) and Ian Drane (boys 8 to 9).
York volleyball scrimmage Thursday
YORK The York Invitational Volleyball Scrimmage will be Aug. 21 in the main gym and auxiliary gym at York Comprehensive High School.
Clover, South Pointe and York Prep join host YCHS Lady Cougars, starting at 5 p.m.

Clover youth baseball practices end Monday
CLOVER The Clover Parks and Recreation Department’s fall youth baseball practices end Monday for Majors, Minors and Coach Pitch teams.
Clover rec staffers have said fall youth baseball participation is up from previous years. Regular-season play will begin the week of Sept. 1.
