The York Comprehensive High School boys’ and girls’ swim teams continue to meet the challenges of a program on the rise in the 4A ranks.
The York program has produced state qualifiers in previous seasons, and this year is no exception.
YCHS swim team excelled in an Aug. 28 three-team meet at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center.
The Cougars swimmers competed against Region 3-AAAA Rock Hill and nonregion opponent South Pointe.
The York boys defeated the Rock Hill Bearcats by 11 points to place second behind the South Pointe Stallions. The girls’ team finished third, six points behind Rock Hill.
“Several York swimmers scored key victories in their events or scored valuable points for the team,” said assistant York swim coach Dave Prescott.
Prescott said Jessica Myers qualified for the state in her second event, and Ariel Prescott broke her own school record for the 100-yard backstroke.
On the boys’ side, “Seth Miller scored a huge victory in the 100-yard butterfly,” said Prescott.
Both the boys’ and girls’ 200-yard relays scored key points. The girls’ relay team qualified for the state meet in the first two meets of the season.
The Cougars’ Garrett Johnson had a couple of second-place finishes in the backstroke and relay events.
“Corban Jones, Joseph Bodie, Dylan Reed and Sam Ferguson all swam great races, both individually and in the relays,” said Prescott, who also is head coach of the YCHS varsity girls’ soccer team.
“The entire swim team performed very well and gave their all,” Prescott said.
Wayne Lowery is the head swim team coach at York Comprehensive High School.
Caitlin Bodie and Morgan Yandell are the senior team members.
Junior swimmers are Anastasia Alicea, Sam Ferguson, Garett Johnson, Anna Littlejohn, Jessica Myers, Ariel Prescott, Dylan Reed and Kerri Ann Walker.
Sophomore participants are Seth Miller, Rachel Jones, Mackenzie Laskey, Daisy Oldaker and Ashley Sigmon.
Breonna Chapman and Joseph Bodie are the freshmen team members, while Rachel Prescott is the lone eighth-grade varsity swim team participant.
Corbin Jones and Janna Thompson are seventh-grade team members.
The YCHS swimmers will compete against Clover at 5 p.m. Sept. 9 at River Hills Country Club.
