Clover High School head boys’ basketball coach Bailey Jackson said he has been pleased with the Blue Eagles’ play, including a season-opening 68-62 win at Kings Mountain.
Sophomore guard Quise Robbins played more like a seasoned veteran during that game, scoring 26 in the non-region contest.
“It was a great win against a very good Kings Mountain team away from home,” Jackson said.
“It’s a small gym and they have a big team.”
Never miss a local story.
The Blue Eagles had a 12-1 run to start the fourth quarter, which sealed a big early-season road win.
“It was a tight game and the kids responded,” Jackson said.
With Robbins pacing the scoring, senior guard John Wilson also scored in double-figures, with 13 points.
Rounding out a balanced scoring attack for the visiting Clover team, Aaron Milner scored nine points; Mark Cavanaugh, eight; Bryce Allen, six; Justin White, fout; and Noah Lindsay, two.
Cavanaugh had Clover’s lone 3-point shot, as the Blue Eagles improved to 3-1 for the season.
Clover fell to Hunter Huss 59-47 in the home clash Dec. 5.
The Blue Eagles began the Hunter Huss game with an offensive explosion, outscoring Huss 20-9 in the first quarter.
Though Hunter Huss began pecking away at the lead in the second and third quarters, the Blue Eagles were clinging to a 42-41 leading entering the fourth.
Huss outscored Clover 18-5 in the final quarter, however, to take the non-region win.
Despite the early-season loss to Huss, Jackson said, he is pleased with the team’s level of intensity.
Jackson said a couple of sophomores have been stepping up, and that the senior leadership has been outstanding.
“The kids are playing hard, with defense generating offense,” he said. “We have a great group and good team chemistry. All of the players are supportive.”
“Our assists to turnover ratio is the best I can remember,” he said.
Before the Huss game, Robbins was averaging 16.5 points per game, with Allen averaging 10 points. Milner was next at 8.8 points per game, with Jeremiah at 7.5 and Wilson at 6.2.
The Blue Eagles will travel to Huss on Dec. 12, with the tipoff scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
The doubleheader begins with the girls’ game starting at 6:30 p.m.
