A Lake Wylie gym is offering a new way to work out: martial arts training combined with CrossFit styling.
Griffin Defense Tactics opened April 28 in 1,400 square feet at 4070 Charlotte Highway, beside Hunt Fish Paddle. Owner Josh Flamm of Lake Wylie explains the new workout, MMA Fit, incorporates mixed martial arts moves with a workout that moves through stations, similar to CrossFit, but are “two totally different types of exercises.”
“MMA and CrossFit meet somewhere in the middle,” he said.
Flamm said by using martial arts moves and adding more cardio with one-minute drills at stations, “it keeps your mind interested.”
Never miss a local story.
The class runs 45 minutes, two times a week.
Kim Oepen, 46, of Lake Wylie has been a member for more than a year and is enjoying the new workout.
“It’s great exercise, and empowering,” said Kim Oepen, 46, of Lake Wylie during a MMA Fit class.
Oepen started at Griffin Defense more than a year ago with her daughter taking one of the gym’s self defense classes, GUTS (Guns Unarmed Tactical Knives and Sticks).
Veronica Ouderkirk, 41, of Lake Wylie said she joined the gym to boost her confidence.
“You never focus on losing weight, but you lose weight and gain control to be more assertive,” she said. “Coming here is like working out with your family.”
And Flamm’s family does workout there.
“I don’t want to do any other sport but this,” said daughter Brooklyn, 12, as she and mom Apryl worked out together at a MMA Fit class.
Griffin Defense also offers boxing, kickboxing and bully defense for school students.
“We’re not a fight gym,” Flamm said. “The main point is physical fitness and learning to practically defend yourself.”
Another addition is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, instructed by Greg Carr, for ages 13 and older. Flamm said participants in this class, offered two times a week, get a workout “and you can defend yourself.” The class focuses on techniques and conditioning.
For Gunner Oepen, 19, it’s just what he was looking for, he said, to be fit for competition.
“This is just different,” Flamm said. “You can do a little bit of everything here.”
Training is open to ages 10 and older, with class size limited to about 12. For hours, class schedule and rates, call 803-746-7176 or visit gdtmartialarts.com.
