Gottaswing Charlotte is coming to Fort Mill this weekend.
Joe and Denise Polsgrove have been teaching swing dance lessons for the last several years, most recently in Charlotte. But until about three years ago, the couple taught lessons in Fort Mill at the Plaza Hotel ballroom. Now they are bringing swing back to the township in conjunction with All Nations Church at 360 Hammond Road.
"They just built a new building and they're only using about half of it," Denise Polsgrove said. "They want to use the other half of it for fun stuff."
The couple lives near the church, and got to know members of the church when they began praying for Denise's son Brett LeBerdia's safe return from Iraq, where the Marine has been deployed.
Never miss a local story.
The couple will be offering a beginners lesson at the church starting at 7 p.m. Saturday. The dance will run from 8 to 10 p.m., following the lesson. The cost of attendance is $5. The lesson is free with the price of admission. Denise Polsgrove suggests anyone who wants to take part in the lesson show up early.
"I know there's a lot of interest in our area, so I'm really glad to bring it back to Fort Mill," she said.
Joe Polsgrove will act as DJ for the dance Saturday, but if the event proves popular enough to become a regular event throughout the year, Denise envisions using it as a platform for local bands, especially high school bands, to play in front of live audiences.
The dress code is casual, and Polsgrove said to wear comfortable clothes. Dance shoes are recommended, but duct tape on the bottom of most shoes will make them slick enough to dance in, she said.
The church is offering child care for children younger than 7 for $1 per child.
To use the child care, call Pam at (704) 543-7272.
