Special to the Fort Mill Times
The Flint Hill Memorial Association held its 122nd annual meeting May 19 at Flint Hill Baptist Church to remember nearly 300 military veterans from the American Revolution to Operation Desert Storm who are buried in the cemetery there and at the Blackstock and Pettus cemeteries.
Members of the Nation Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Fort Mill Society of the Children of the American Revolution read each name aloud during the Roll Call of Honor.
Charles Garrison presided and Danny Twitty delivered the invocation. Officers elected for the upcoming year were Murray White, president; Ron Edwards, vice president; Harriett Lehman, secretary/treasurer; and Jake Edwards, historian.
Never miss a local story.
The Flint Hill Fire Department Honor Guard presented the colors. The Pineville Methodist Men’s Chorus performed “The Star Spangled Banner” and “The Armed Forces Medley.” Veterans in attendance and family members of those in active military service were recognized.
David J. Cantrell, Corporal USMC, a 2007 Fort Mill High School graduate and veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, spoke about his experiences in Karma, Iraq, and in Afghanistan during the Marjah offensive.
Following Cantrell’s speech, the service moved from the sanctuary to the cemetery, which had been decorated with flags indicating the graves of those who served in the military. The Eli Bailes American Legion Post 43 of Fort Mill fired a 21-gun salute and Michael Wagner performed “Taps.”
