Fort Mill Elementary students in kindergarten through second grade were treated to a story walk last week organized by local children’s author and parent volunteer Derick Wilder.
Groups of students walked around the playground to find pieces of a story they read aloud. The story was written by written by Wilder, whose daughter is a student at FMES. Fifth-graders were also on hand to read to their younger reading buddies.
The event was part of Fort Mill Elementary’s Read Across America Week celebration, when the school took every available opportunity to make reading fun. Students collected new and gently-used books for charity throughout the week. Teachers and students also celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss by dressing as “The Cat in the Hat” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” decorating classroom doors in themes from favorite Seuss stories, and inviting guest speakers into the classrooms to read to students.
