The quest for a third straight Tobacco Road League title has begun for the Primetime Players.
The team clinched a playoff spot by beating the Greensboro Cobras 113-101 at Banks Street Gym Saturday.
Led by former Charleston Southern University player Chris Moore, who scored 27 points, the Primetime Players close the regular season with another home game at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Head coach Chris Thomas said he felt good about his chances to three-peat as his team improved to 9-1 on the season with the win. On the other hand, Thomas said he wasn’t as impressed with his team’s performance against Greensboro.
“They are a tough team and I don’t think we played well at all,” he said.
The Primetime Players went on a 10-2 run in the closing minutes of the game after being tied at 93. The Primetime Players outscored Greensboro 33-25 in the fourth quarter.
Greensboro started the third quarter on a 9-2 run, before the Primetime Players were able to battle back and take a 67-66 lead. From there, the Primetime Players went on a 9-3 run of before allowing Greensboro to catch up. Former Johnson C. Smith player James Dillard scored eight of his 14 points in the third quarter for the Players.
Moore was the team’s scoring leader with 12 of his 27 points coming in the fourth quarter. Several times Greensboro tied the game, although the Primetime Players took an 80-76 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Primetime Players had to continuously fight off runs from Greensboro as the Cobras put together a run in the first half on several occasions, including one with about 90 seconds left in the first half to take a 54-52 lead at the break.
Also scoring in double figures for Primetime were Donald Rutherford and Malaciah Jones. Both had 21 points. Brian Mobley scored 18.
