The 2014 high school football season will kick off in about a week, with games starting in about a month.
Both Fort Mill and Nation Ford high schools are expected to again contend for playoff spots in Region III, but they will also have to contend with new region foes.
Region III-4A lost South Pointe and Lancaster high schools, which both dropped to 3A, while the region has picked up an always difficult Gaffney team.
Fort Mill will start the season with a strong nonregion schedule in White Knoll, Lugoff-Elgin, Greenville, River Bluff and West Florence.
The Jackets open the season on the road at River Bluff High, were the team will take on White Knoll Aug. 22, before returning home against Lugoff-Elgin Aug. 29.
Lugoff-Elgin brings new head coach and former Jackets defensive coordinator Dave Thomas to Fort Mill for the first time since he took over the head coaching duties earlier this month for the Demons.
Fort Mill then hits the road with games at Greenville Sept. 5 and West Florence Sept. 19, with a home game sandwiched in between against River Bluff Sept. 12.
The Region III schedule for the Jackets opens against the defending 4A state champs Northwestern Sept. 26 at home. Fort Mill will have home region games against Rock Hill and York.
The Fort Mill and Nation Fordrivalry game has been moved from the end of the season to the middle with this year’s game slated for Oct. 10 at Nation Ford.
The Jackets will finish the regular season on the road at Gaffney on Halloween and will have a week off before the playoffs if the team makes it.
Nation Ford opens its season at home against Forestview Aug. 22. The team will tackle both Boiling Springs and Lugoff-Elgin on the road in nonregion games, before hosting Greenville and Ridge View at home.
The Falcons will open its region schedule at home against Gaffney Sept. 26 and host Fort Mill two weeks later on Oct. 10, having an open date on Oct. 3. Nation Ford will also have a home region game against Northwestern Oct. 24 before finish the regular season on the road against Rock Hill and Clover.
Indian Land will open its 2014 campaign at home against Buford Aug. 29, but will then travel to Buford later in the season to play them again Oct. 24. The Warriors finish the regular season Halloween night at Andrew Jackson.
