The hot streak continues.
The Fort Mill Lady Jackets tennis team is undefeated after knocking off the two toughest teams in Region III.
For the first time, Fort Mill has beaten both Clover and Nation Ford in tennis in the same season. In fact, both wins came in the same week. Since Nation Ford came into existence seven years ago, the Falcons and Blue Eagles have had a strong command of the local girls’ tennis scene.
That landscape is changing this year with the emergence of Fort Mill, now 8-0 on the season. One of those wins was the team’s first against Clover in more than 20 years.
Against Clover, Fort Mill won 5-2 with No. 1 singles Suzette Smit, No. 2 singles Rachel Brooks, No. 3 singles Reagan Paff and No. 5 singles Kaja Klages all getting wins. Smit and Brooks also teamed for a No.1 doubles win.
“It was an incredible night of tennis,” said Fort Mill head coach Angela Niccum.
Fort Mill then went on to beat Nation Ford in an even closer battle, winning 4-3 with the match coming down to No. 1 doubles with Smit and Brooks outlasting Suzanna Goss and Jordan Sawyer 6-4, 7-5.
Brooks and Smit were down 0-5 in the second set before winning seven straight games for the win. It was sweet revenge for earlier matches, when Sawyer beat Brooks in No. 2 singles play 6-3, 6-1. At No. 1 singles, Smit has defeated Goss 7-5, 6-3.
“Proud cannot even begin to describe how I feel about my Lady Jackets right now,” Niccum said.
Paff beat Nation Ford’s Susie Clark 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and the Lady Falcons’ Darby Trull beat Ellie Prain at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 5 singles Nation Ford’s Megan Gallagher beat Jessica Brewer 6-0, 6-0. And at No. 2 doubles, Fort Mill’s Shreya Katti and Klages defeated Annie Morgenstern and Cassidy Ford 7-5, 6-3.
Fort Mill went on to finish the week out by beating Lancaster 6-0 and dropping only seven games in the match. They also beat Rock Hill 5-0 in a rain-shortened match.
