At times it wasn’t clear whether they’d won for having character or having the most characters.
Teachers swallowed by oversized football uniforms, screaming chants, obstacle races, a principal in a Panther-colored tutu – all were part of a Sugar Creek Elementary School pep rally Tuesday to celebrate its recognition as a Champion of Character school.
The Carolina Panthers and Harris Teeter accepted nominations from throughout the region to see what schools best student character. Sugar Creek won, which brought the pep rally with Sir Purr, TopCats and Panthers players Graham Gano and Thomas Davis.
Principal Michelle Gritz said her school works to promote diversity and understanding among students and staff. They’d largely kept the event Tuesday a secret from students. The event included a $2,500 grant to the school from the team and grocery chain.
