The Carolinas Golf Association’s 53rd Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship will be played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., on the Dye course from September 24-26. The championship is comprised of 54-holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final round.
Two-time defending champion Rick Cloninger, 57, of Fort Mill, will be looking to join seven-time Carolinas Senior Amateur champion Dale Morey of High Point, N.C., as the only golfers to win this event three consecutive years (Morey won four successive titles between ’69 and ’72). Cloninger is in the midst of a tournament-packed golf schedule. Last week, he advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship before losing to the eventual winner and next week he will travel to French Lick, Indiana to represent South Carolina in the USGA Men’s State Team Championship.
The starting field includes 117 players. First and second round starting times can be found at http://www.ghintpp.com/carolinasgolf/TPPOnlineScoring/Pairings.aspx?id=549. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by September 24, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.
