It wasn’t exactly home court advantage, but playing in a familiar gym at Springfield Middle School, the Lady Falcons volleyball team won the silver bracket and finished ninth in its own Nation Ford Invitational.
The Lady Falcons were bounced out of their own gym at Nation Ford High after finishing 2-1 in pool play, where they missed being in the gold bracket by just one set.
Nation Ford lost to Boiling Springs during its first match 21-25, 26-24, 12-15 in pool play, but bounced back to beat Andrew Jackson 25-14, 26-27, 15-6 and Lexington 25-17, 21-25, 15-10.
“We have done so well,” said Nation Ford head coach Carrie Christian. “We have been able to rebound from that first loss and we have gotten better during the day.”
Never miss a local story.
The Lady Falcons went 5-1 in the tournament and were forced to play for ninth through 16th at Springfield Middle, just up the road from Nation Ford and where some of its players competed before high school. Once there, Nation Ford drew Rock Hill in the first match. The Lady Falcons controlled the tempo from the onset and won 25-9, 25-17.
They then advanced to play North Augusta and won 25-15, 25-20 to go on to the silver bracket finals where they played Ridge View and struggled some, dropping the second set 10-25 after opening the match with a 25-21 win. Nation Ford won the third set 15-8.
“This year had the best overall competition and we saw more three set matches than ever before,” Christian said.
“For Nation Ford specifically, we grew so much from start to finish and really benefited from the tough competition all day. We had four matches go to three sets and won three of them. We were really tested by River View in the finals of the silver division and are very proud that we played such great defense against their athletic swings.”
Charlotte County Day won the tournament and the gold bracket played at Nation Ford High.
Nation Ford came into the tournament with a 4-5 record and left with 9-6 . The Lady Falcons will host Fort Mill this week at home and then travel to York for two Region III matches this week.
