As several inches of snow fell on the Fort Mill area last week, school wasn’t the only thing canceled for the Fort Mill School District.
With school being out Wednesday and Thursday and on a two-hour delay Friday, several athletic events were called for both of Fort Mill’s high schools. Athletic events were even canceled on Friday as well with other school districts such as Rock Hill School District and Spartanburg District Six, home of the Dorman Cavaliers, being out of school and not making the trip to Fort Mill and Nation Ford high schools.
As part of the cancellations, the Jackets had their basketball game against Lancaster postponed for a second time this month as Lancaster County School District had called off a game originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 3 because of the potential for bad weather that ended up not materializing. The game had been rescheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 17, when once again, it was called off because of the snow storm and ensuing freeze that iced area roads.
Fort Mill head basketball coach Dwayne Hartsoe said the make-up date for the Lancaster game will now be Wednesday, Jan. 31, with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game afterward. The Jackets also had its game against Northwestern canceled for Friday because the Rock Hill School District didn’t hold classes. That game has been rescheduled for this Saturday with the JV girls starting at 4 p.m.
The varsity girls will play at 5:30 and the boys will play at 7 p.m.
Wrestling affected, too
Fort Mill wrestling also had its dual meet against Region IV opponent Northwestern canceled on last Thursday. That dual went old school and was held this past Monday night at Banks Street Gym, the former gym for Fort Mill High when it was located in that area of town. The meet was held after press time. Nation Ford was lucky in that it didn’t have any sports scheduled for those two days that school was out locally, but it did have Friday games scheduled with Dorman, matching up two of the top 10 teams in the state. However, those games were canceled as well. They have been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 6, according to Director of Athletics Brian Turner.
Going forward in their regularly schedule match-ups, both Nation Ford and Fort Mill were scheduled to play each other Jan. 23 at Nation Ford with the girls’ varsity game starting at 6:30 and the boys’ following. The two schools will also be meeting on the wrestling mat on the same day at 7 p.m. at Fort Mill.
