Foods take me home -- thin-sliced pizza, black-and-white cookies, or half moons as we call them, and lox and bagel. I hail from upstate New York and yep, I am a fan of the Super Bowl XLII champs, the Giants.
Recently, my friend -- also a Giants fan -- and I found a great New York-style deli, Sammy's Diner & Delicatessen in Indian Land.
At Sammy's I could satisfy one of my cravings that usually can only be satiated by picking up the ingredients in a grocery store, and that's if I can find some good salmon.
I nearly jumped for joy when under "Rise & Shine [Breakfast]" I read No. 4 Bagel with lox and cream cheese for $5.99. And that includes coffee until 11 a.m.
Unfortunately, we were there for a late lunch, but a few breakfast items are available all day upon request. The bagel bread is soft inside with skin you rip with your teeth, topped with a creamy cream cheese spread and the smoky delight of lox, or salmon. It's a combination I'd eat any time of day as a meal or snack.
The rest of Sammy's menu reflects the New York-decor theme, with photos of Manhattan and skyscrapers hanging on the wall. It's a deli shop, simple with plenty of cafe-style seating and no smoking.
Like New York itself, the deli's menu reflects a melting pot of culinary influences -- including Italian, Greek, Irish, Asian and Jewish.
The breakfast menu (priced $1.99 to-$7.99) includes Belgian waffles, French toast, Challah French toast (weekends only), potato pancakes, eggwiches, about 17 omelets -- including cholesterol-free, feta cheese, and, naturally, a New York omelet with pastrami or corned beef. There's also a kids menu with silver dollar and chocolate chip pancakes and more, priced $1.99 to $2.59.
The Good Afternoon Lunch menu includes everything from New York Style Deli Sandwiches ($5.49 to $7.99) including pastrami brisket, salami, shrimp and whitefish salad, and Classic sandwiches like the Reuben for $7.99, to homemade salad platters ($6.99 to $12.99) and grilled items, like burgers, chicken and even a veggie burger ($5.49 to $8.99).
There are also salads ($3.99 to $6.99) including Cobb, Asian Chicken and stuffed tomato.
There are 13 wraps ($6.49 to $7.29), including a California with turkey and avocado, and Manhattan with roast beef, Swiss cheese, peppers and onions.
Soups come by the cup or bowl ($1.99 to $3.29) including soup of the day, chicken noodle and Matzoh ball. Again, there's also a children's menu ($2.95 to $4.95) with PB&J, grilled cheese, pizza bagel and more.
Sammy's has a welcoming atmosphere where friends and family can gather 'round the table, enjoy good food and sit and talk. If you can't dine in, you can fax orders to (803) 802-6561, and catering is available. It's a great place to eat -- "forget about it." Don't really, go!
