Gunman arrested after demanding ‘real money’ in Rock Hill home invasion, police say

A robber on Friday allegedly broke into a Rock Hill man and woman’s apartment, held them at gunpoint and demanded “real money,” not pennies, before he got away with more than $2,000 cash, police said.

Andre Barnes, 42, was arrested Monday and charged with burglary, kidnapping and weapons charges, according to Rock Hill police.

Officers were sent to Gable Oaks apartments on Patriot Parkway at about 7:10 a.m. after receiving reports of a robbery, according to a Rock Hill police report. Police spoke with a resident, 29, who said that she and a 9-year-old boy were preparing to leave their apartment but as they walked out the front door, Barnes approached them.

They tried walking around him, but Barnes took out a small revolver, grabbed the woman's sweatshirt, put the gun to her head and forced her back into the apartment, the report states. The boy ran to a relative’s apartment for help. Barnes forced the woman into the apartment’s back bedroom, where a man, 25, was asleep. The man awoke to the suspect pointing a gun at him and demanding money.

The victim told police he got a box filled with coins and handed it to Barnes, who said, “I don’t want pennies; I want real money,” according to the report.

The man opened a dresser drawer and took out $2,800 cash. Barnes snatched the money away and fled the apartment. The woman told police she tried to follow him, but she could not see in which direction he ran once he crossed the threshold. A neighbor told her Barnes might have fled in a dark gray Pontiac Grand Am.

Barnes was charged with two counts of armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping, possession of a firearm during a violent crime, unlawful carrying of a pistol and burglary.
