The Rock Hill Police Department is investigating a purse snatching incident from Tuesday after witnesses saw a man steal a 71-year-old woman’s purse with about $2,000 cash inside from the parking lot of the Dave Lyle Boulevard Walmart.

The woman told officers that she was loading groceries into her vehicle trunk around 5:45 p.m. when a man ran past her and stole her purse from the shopping cart, according to a Rock Hill police report.

The man then got into a pickup and fled the scene. One witness, a 47-year-old man from Rock Hill, heard the woman yell for help and he tried to catch the suspect, the report states.

But, the truck got away, speeding toward Red River Road, police say. Officers are reviewing Walmart’s store surveillance video of the parking lot incident.

Witnesses described the suspect as a white man between the ages of 18 and 25, according to the report. He was wearing a baseball cap, a dark t-shirt and shorts. He fled in a silver pick up truck with a toolbox on the back.

The woman, who is from Fort Lawn, told officers that he got away with cash, identification cards and three debit cards.
