A York man is accused of choking his girlfriend and holding a piece of broken mirror to her neck hours after he allegedly punched her in the face and dragged her across the yard by her hair on Thursday, deputies say.
Authorities were first called to the woman’s West Liberty Road home at about 5 p.m. when she reported that her boyfriend, Nathan Barrett, 33, came to her house to see the child they have together, according to a York County Sheriff’s report.
The woman, 23, told Barrett the child was not at the house and he could not be around her because he already faces pending criminal domestic violence charges. That’s when Barrett kicked in the front door, the woman told deputies.
She ran out the back door and into the woods behind the house. Barrett left, and she retreated to a friend’s home. She left and went to a grocery store, where Barrett found her and punched her in the mouth before he jumped into her car and drove off with it. A friend took the woman home, but Barrett was there waiting. He grabbed her by her hair and pulled her across the yard.
Never miss a local story.
A neighbor in the driveway checking her mail yelled for the man to stop before she went in her house and called police. Deputies were unable to establish contact with the man, but issued warrants against him.
About six hours later, Barrett went to the woman’s house again, police reports show, and began choking the woman. He threatened to kill her before he pulled her into the bathroom, put her in the shower and put a piece of broken mirror to her neck. She struggled out of his grasp, she told deputies, and suffered a cut on her left ear in the process. She declined medical treatment. The woman’s neighbor agreed to take the woman in for the night.
Deputies arrested Barrett on Friday, charging him with two counts of criminal domestic violence and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. By Saturday afternoon, he was held at the York County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
Court records show that in November 2013 he was charged with criminal domestic violence. He has requested a jury trial for that charge.
