A Rock Hill father is accused of drunkenly punching his son in the eye and trying to strangle him Thursday night, prompting a brawl with other relatives that police had to break up, authorities said.

Officers at about 10:20 p.m. were sent to a unit at the Oak Hollow apartment complex when they received a call about a disturbance, according to a Rock Hill police report. Police arrived on scene and heard several people yelling before spotting four people “actively fighting” near the front door. Police broke up the fight and detained Jerry Jaquay Howard, 35, who suffered from injuries to his mouth and left eyebrow.

Police spoke with Howard’s son, 15, who claimed that his father was drunk when he punched him in the left eye and tried strangling him, the report states. The boy suffered from black and blue bruises and swelling under his eye. Officers spoke with a witness, who reported that she saw Howard tried to strangle his son. That’s when she and other family members intervened.

Howard’s wife told officers that she and Howard no longer live together, but she confirmed that relatives tried getting him out of the house once he assaulted their son, the report states. Police arrested Howard, charging him with third-degree assault and battery. He was also placed on trespass from his wife’s home.
