A woman in York was arrested on Wednesday after police say they found her child alone in an apartment around 1:30 a.m. while she left home to pick up her sister.

Police charged Brittany Nicole Howell, 22, with cruelty to children after she admitted to leaving her 1-year-old daughter alone in a play pen, according to a York Police report. Officers left the child with a responsible adult at her home after speaking with state officials from the Department of Social Services.

Officers went to Howell’s home early Wednesday morning after receiving a tip that a child had been left unattended, according to the report. Authorities called Howell, who initially said she was standing in the checkout line of a grocery store when officers arrived at her apartment, the report states.

At first she told officers that she’d left her daughter home alone while she went grocery shopping, the report states. Later, police say she confirmed what her sister told officers: that she’d left her daughter alone because she needed to pick up her sister somewhere.

The child was sleeping and she didn’t want to wake her, Howell told police. When police entered the apartment with Howell, they found the child in a play pen, crying.

Howell was charged and taken to jail, the report states.
