A Rock Hill man is accused of assaulting a man with a hatchet.
Darren Hulick, 20, allegedly confronted a 25-year-old man at a T-M Store on Hall Spencer Road Saturday afternoon, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report. Hulick reportedly exchanged words with a 23-year-old woman holding a baby, then spoke to the victim.
The argument turned into a physical altercation, with Hulick allegedly punching the subject and pushing him into the bed of his pickup truck. An unidentified person reportedly hit the victim as well, the report states.
Hulick then grabbed a hatchet from the truck bed and struck the subject in the ribs repeatedly, deputies say. The man suffered a possible broken rib, the report states.
The victim threw a baby seat at his attacker and grabbed a logging chain from the truck for self-defense, the report states. The men then backed away and fled the scene.
Deputies located Hulick and the other person in a Jeep Grand Cherokee at Brer Rabbit Run later that day. Deputies determined both men had equal participation in the argument, but Hulick was arrested for causing bodily harm.
Hulick was charged with assault and battery first degree. He was taken to the York County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond. The cause of the argument was not released by police.
