A shoplifting suspect escaped from York police Wednesday — taking off her handcuffs and escaping from the patrol car.
The suspect, Rhonda Denine Ramirez, was recaptured nearby, after officers contacted the York County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Tracking Unit for help.
Ramirez was accused of shoplifting at the Dollar General store on Filbert Highway.
She was able to get out the handcuffs and escape from the patrol vehicle while officers were speaking with the complainant inside the store, said York Police Chief Andy Robinson.

Robinson said she was captured a “short distance” away behind the Dollar General store.
Ramirez is charged with shoplifting and escape.
Robinson said the police deparatment is investigating how she escaped.
Robinson said in a statement that “there appear to have been violations of departmental policy pertaining to custody and proper handling of prisoners.”
