Extradition looms for Honduran immigrant accused in York County killing of greenhouse owner

The Honduran immigrant accused of killing a beloved Charlotte greenhouse owner at his Lake Wylie home in York County on Jan. 6 has been served a governor’s warrant for extradition to South Carolina and likely soon will be in York to face murder charges.

Kevin Dejesus, 22, of Charlotte, once worked for Jessie Campbell at Campbell’s Greenhouse & Nursery in Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood.

A hearing scheduled for Thursday on extradition was canceled after a warrant signed by both Gov. Pat McCrory of North Carolina and Nikki Haley of South Carolina was served on Dejesus, said Meghan McDonald, a spokesperson for the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office. Although Dejesus could file an emergency appeal, police from York County now have the authority to pick up Dejesus in Charlotte and bring him to the York County jail to be formally charged with murder.

Dejesus remains in the Mecklenburg County jail without bond. Attempts on Friday to reach his public defender in Charlotte were unsuccessful.

The killing of Campbell, a former teacher, stunned customers and former students. A motive for the crime remains unclear.

Dejesus was later caught in Charlotte Jan. 21 after police said pieces of a broken taillight found at the scene matched his truck.
