Fanning, Palmer talk issues in state Senate 17 race

The two candidates running for S.C. Senate District 17 are in strong agreement on one thing: A fresh approach is needed to combat the inaction of state government Columbia. Mike Fanning, 49, who lives near Great Falls, will face Republican Mark Palmer, 57, of York in the November election.

Rock Hill voters elected Wes Hayes seven times to represent them in the South Carolina Senate, but on Tuesday that run came to an end when he narrowly lost a GOP primary to newcomer Wes Climer. Changing demographics and the governor's endorsement may have played a part in the election night upset.

Wes Climer upsets longtime SC Sen. Wes Hayes in Rock Hill

The fate of several long-serving members of the S.C. Senate depends on the outcome of primary races Tuesday. Seven-term incumbent Sen. Wes Hayes faces a challenge from former York County GOP chairman Wes Climer in Rock Hill, South Carolina, while Sen. Creighton Coleman, D-Winnsboro, and Sen. Harvey Peeler, R-Gaffney, also face challengers in the Democratic and Republican primaries that also voters in York and Chester counties.

York Co. Council primary offers rematch in District 3

It's a 2014 rematch in York County Council District 3. Robert Winkler, the incumbent councilman from York, South Carolina, will face a challenge in the June 14 GOP primary from Joe Cox, the district's previous councilman whom Winkler unseated two years earlier. Both candidates spoke with The Herald about the challenges facing the district and York County.

Former Carolina Panther ends race for York County sheriff

Michael Scurlock has dropped out of the York County, South Carolina, sheriff’s race after failing to collect enough signatures to get on the November ballot as a petition candidate. The decision by the former Carolina Panther means the winner of the June 14 Republican primary, Kevin Tolson or John Williams, will run unopposed in the general election.

Haley targets incumbent Hayes in Rock Hill GOP Senate primary

SC Senate candidate Wes Climer, a Rock Hill Republican, has picked up a big endorsement this week. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will visit Rock Hill next week to formally endorse the former York County GOP chair in his race against incumbent state Sen. Wes Hayes. Haley has endorsed other challengers to her Republican foes in the Legislature this cycle.
