Former Clover High hoops star Milner helping Lander succeed

Former Clover High School basketball standout Curtis Milner has helped Lander get off to an impressive 3-0 start in the Peach Belt Conference race.

The Bearcats, 7-2 overall, are the only team which remains unbeaten in the Peach Belt.

Milner, a 6-7, 205-pound junior forward-center, is averaging 7.3 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. Milner leads the Peach Belt in blocked shots, averaging 3.1 blocks a game. He already has topped last season's total of blocked shots (35) with 44 this season.

On Monday, Milner had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks as the Bearcats held off UNC Pembroke, 71-69, to remain undefeated in conference play.

ERSKINE: Sophomore guard Jean Marie Harris (Indian Land) has contributed to the Flying Fleet's 5-3 overall start this basketball season.

A 5-11 sophomore, Harris is averaging 4.9 points and 1.6 rebounds a game for the Fleet, which is 2-2 in Conference Carolinas play.

KENTUCKY: Wildcats freshman wide receiver Gene McCaskill (Chester) helped his team take a 25-19 Liberty Bowl victory over East Carolina last week in Memphis, Tenn.

The 6-0, 175-pound freshman caught three passes for 64 yards. He also had his longest reception of the season which covered 48 yards.

McCaskill, an all-purpose athlete at Chester, finished his first year of college competition with 15 catches for 181 yards.

Last year at Chester, McCaskill played quarterback and wide receiver, accounting for more than 2,500 yards passing, rushing and receiving.

PRESBYTERIAN: Fort Mill resident Katlin Moore (Charlotte Catholic) is the second-leading scorer on the Blue Hose women's basketball team.

The 5-7 sophomore guard is averaging 10.3 points a game and is pulling down 3.9 rebounds an outing.

Moore was an All-Mecklenburg County selection and a two-time MVP of her Charlotte Catholic team. She concluded her prep career with 1,266 points.

QUEENS: The Royals women's basketball team features a pair of former Rock Hill High Lady Bearcats in twin sisters, Markeisha and Shakendra Hicks.

Markeisha Hicks is a 5-11 sophomore forward who is averaging 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds a game. Shakendra Hicks, a 5-9 sophomore guard, is averaging a point and 3.6 rebounds a game.

The Royals, 3-5 overall and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas, handed Barton its first league loss of the season Monday, 67-61.

TENNESSEE: Former Volunteers defensive back Jonathan Hefney (Rock Hill) will watch as his Philadelphia Eagles teammates take on the New York Giants in the second round of the NFL playoffs Sunday.

Hefney, a 5-9, 180-pound rookie, is a member of the Eagles' practice squad and hasn't been activated for any games this year. He was originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was released in July.

The Eagles signed Hefney to their practice squad on Sept. 9.

A four-year letter winner at Tennessee, Hefney started 50 straight games for the Vols, the most by a position player in school history. He finished his college career with 322 tackles and 10 interceptions.
