Winthrop's volleyball team remained unbeaten at home as it claimed a key Big South Conference victory Tuesday by defeating Coastal Carolina 3-1. The victory improves the Eagles to 12-6 overall, 4-1 in conference play, and runs their home winning streak to nine straight.
Coastal Carolina (8-9, 2-2) appeared to have the opening set in its control as the Chanticleers led 20-15, but the Eagles, behind the serve of Kellie Sellers, ran off seven unanswered points to take a 22-20 lead and went on to win the set 25-22.
The second set went Winthrop's way as the Eagles improved their serve and compiled a .405 attack percentage in breezing to a 25-14 win.
Following intermission, Winthrop came out in the third set and fell behind 20-15 just as it did in the opening set, but the Eagles would not have an answer this time as the Chanticleers prevailed 25-21. After hitting so well in set two, the Eagles' offense managed to hit just .051 in the losing the third set.
Winthrop bounced back to take the fourth set 25-22 and prevent Coastal from forcing a fifth and final set as they Eagles got back into its systems both offensively and defensively.
Winthrop returns to action on Friday when it travels to Clinton to face Presbyterian.
MEN'S GOLF — In Daufuskie Island, the Winthrop men's golf team finished last in the 12-team Rees Jones Intercollegiate tournament at the Haig Point Golf Club.
The Eagles totaled 950 strokes in the 54-hole event and finished well back of tourney champion South Carolina, which ran away from the field with a 5-over-par score of 869. The Gamecocks finished 37 shots ahead of second-place UNC Wilmington.
The Eagles return to action Oct. 18 when they travel to Savannah, Ga., for the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate.
