Duke's Smith suspended for two games

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke guard Nolan Smith will sit out two games because he played in an unsanctioned summer league.

Smith said Tuesday night after the Blue Devils' 84-48 exhibition victory over Findlay that he was suspended because he played a game with overseas players and professionals over the summer near his hometown of Washington, D.C.

The junior will miss the opener against UNC Greensboro on Nov. 13 and a game three nights later against Coastal Carolina. He didn't play in the first half against Findlay so his teammates could adjust to playing without him.

The Blue Devils already have a thin backcourt — Smith and senior Jon Scheyer are the only returning guards with significant experience. Smith averaged 8.4 points last season.

Kyle Singler scored 20 points in Tuesday's win. Scheyer added 19 points for the Blue Devils, who held the defending Division II national champions to 25.3 percent shooting.

SYRACUSE — Christopher Johnson and Laurence Ekperigin hooted and hollered as they skipped off Jim Boeheim Court, huge smiles creasing their faces and seemingly as stunned as the Syracuse Orange at what had just transpired.

Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining, and Division II Le Moyne stunned Syracuse 82-79 in an exhibition game.

Wes Johnson, who led Syracuse with 34 points, hit a 3 from the left corner to put Syracuse ahead 79-78 with 22 seconds left.

Then Christopher Johnson responded with his sixth 3-pointer of the game, which came from the left side after Syracuse's Kris Joseph backed off defensively.

MARYLAND — Sean Mosley and Landon Milbourne each scored 14 points, Greivis Vasquez added 13, and Maryland breezed past Indiana of Pennsylvania 75-54 in an exhibition game.

Mosley averaged 5.3 points last season but spent much of the offseason honing his shooting touch. The sophomore guard went 7 for 9 from the floor.

Julian Sanders scored 14 and Thomas Young had 13 for the Crimson Hawks, a Division II team that went 22-8 last year.

Maryland trailed 18-15 before Adrian Bowie contributed three baskets to a 12-0 run that put the Terrapins ahead for good. Minutes later, Terps freshman James Padgett made a layup and a follow-jam to ignite an 11-point surge that made it 42-26 late in the half.

MINNESOTA — Minnesota coach Tubby Smith has suspended two players indefinitely for breaking team rules.

Smith would not say why freshman forward Royce White and senior guard Devron Bostick were in trouble. They'll be held out of exhibitions Thursday (against Minnesota Duluth) and Monday (against Minnesota State Moorhead) and possibly more, until Smith decides they're ready to return to the No. 25-ranked Gophers.

“It could be two games. It could be five, six. It could be more,” Smith said, adding: “It could be 20. It depends on what I want, what I decide.”
