Goose Creek 48, Lancaster 0

- The Herald

GOOSE CREEK -- For the second consecutive season, Lancaster traveled to the lower part of the state to take on the Goose Creek Gators. Unfortunately for the Bruins, the outcome was reversed Friday as the Gators came away with a 48-0 win.

The Bruins were just a year removed from making the Class AAAA Division II state semifinals, but ran into a Goose Creek defense that resembled an immovable object, especially during the first half.

Lancaster's first five drives each ended in the same fashion, three quick plays and a punt back to Goose Creek. The field position battled leaned heavily in favor of the Gators.

The Bruins created a stalemate through the first quarter, but could only hold the Gators offense for so long.

Goose Creekës bruising fullback Mike Myers finally lit up the scoreboard with a 21-yard scamper early in the second quarter and it set off a slew of points for the homestanding Gators.

Myers, a freshman, scored on his first carry of the game.

It was only the beginning. The Gators added touchdowns on their next three possessions in the half, adding up to a 28-point quarter that all but buried the Bruins.

Lancaster struggled moving the ball, but shot itself in the foot time and time again on shotgun snaps. Generally, Lancaster recovered their miscues.

The nail in the coffin might have come when Goose Creek recovered an errant Bruins snap with less than two minutes remaining in the half.

The Gators held a three-touchdown lead, then added another score with 15 seconds remaining in the second period when Ranoy Hines worked a draw play to perfection, scoring from 10 yards out.

Lancaster did little in the second half while the Gators continued to pour it on the Bruins.

“We probably played our most complete game of the season,” Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy said. “Hopefully, we are peaking at the right time.”

Goose Creek advances to face North Augusta. It will be an opportunity for the Gators to pick up their first 10-win season in school history and make it past the second round of the playoffs for the first time.

Lancaster heads into the offseason with two consecutive playoff appearances and a 7-5 record.

“There are a lot of teams that would like to be in the playoffs two years in a row and finish with a 7-5 record,” Lancaster coach Bennie McMurray said. “We did not perform well tonight and I hate it for our seniors, but we had a nice season in one of the state's toughest regions.”
