South Pointe 42, James Island 0

- bbyers@heraldonline.com

South Pointe football fans like to call their team the Stallion Stampede.

After Friday night's 42-0 win over James Island in the second round of the Class AAAA Division II playoffs, the Trojans headed home to Charleston probably thinking they had just played the South Pointe Steamrollers.

The Stallions jumped to an early 21-0 advantage after one quarter and added 14 more points in the second for a 35-0 lead at the half. The second half came down to how many points South Pointe would end up with and if James Island would get on the scoreboard.

South Pointe's defense has not been scored on in two playoff games this postseason, whereas the Stallions have scored 81 points. The Stallions' win set up a rematch of last year's state championship game against rival Northwestern next Friday at District Three Stadium. The winner advances to the title game on Dec. 4 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.

South Pointe (10-3) used a good combination of plays from scrimmage, opportunities set up by its defense and long plays as the Stallions dominated the first 24 minutes against James Island, which ended its season at 4-9.

The defense was stout again on Friday and kept the home crowd yelling for a big play nearly every time James Island snapped the ball. The Stallions got what they asked for, and for the umpteenth time this season, junior Jadeveon Clowney took center stage.

Clowney, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end with 4.5 speed, blocked a punt, picked up the ball and ran it in for an 11-yard touchdown. Stallions coach Bobby Carroll said he would make a conservative guess that Clowney had 12 tackles, but probably a lot more when the video is broken down this morning. Clowney batted down a pass for good measure.

“I ate at Waffle House this morning,'' Clowney said after being asked how many bowls of Wheaties he had eaten Friday morning. “It was junior shadow day, and I wanted to eat a good meal before heading the the doctor's office where one of my friend's mother works.

“While I was eating, all I could think about was tonight's game; was like that all day. I had to play a good game and help us get back to the state championship. It was our last home game this season and there was a lot riding on it. We had to win or our season was over.''

But Clowney wasn't the only Stallions player to shine on defense. South Pointe turned two first-half interceptions by Jeremy Massey into touchdowns.

The score was 7-0 after South Pointe's Ce-Ce Jones ran the ball in from the 6-yard line. James Island set up at its 20 after Landon Ard boomed the kickoff into the end zone for a touchback. The Trojans drove the ball down the field and had a first down at the Stallions' 14. Quarterback Chris Wilkins threw a short pass that was picked off by Massey at the 10. He returned it 90 yards. Ard booted the extra point for a 14-0 Stallions' lead.

The defense delivered again on James Island's next possession. The Trojans stalled at their 30 and were forced to punt. Clowney raced into the backfield, blocked the kick and scored from the 11 for a 21-0 lead.

“Clowney had another big game, but so did the other players on both sides of the ball,'' Carroll said. “We mostly played backups in the second half, but we put our defensive starters back in a couple of time when (James Island) had chances to score.

“The shutout means a lot to our players, and they worked hard to get this one. That's No. 6 for us this season, which is a school record.''

The Stallions continued their quick-scoring attack five plays into the second quarter. On second down from their 44, Stallions quarterback Corey Rawls swung a pass out to the left that tailback Quinten Darby caught in the backfield. Darby, who said Wednesday afternoon it was his favorite play, turned on the jets and raced 56 yards for South Pointe's fourth touchdown and a 28-0 lead.

The defense was fired up, and the offense was blistering hot. Midway through the quarter, Massey picked off his second pass and decided to run it out. He was slammed to the ground at the Stallions' 9.
