The state track meets begin today and end Saturday at Spring Valley High School in Columbia. The teams in all four of the state's classifications will compete, with classes AAAA and AAA meets going on at the same time starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday and scheduled to end around 1:30 p.m.
Class AA and A meets start at 1 p.m. on Saturday (field events), with the running events beginning at 2 p.m.
The two higher classifications will get their field events and 3,200 races out of the way today beginning at 5:45 p.m.
Locally, there are several outstanding performers to watch. On the Class AAAA girls side, Rock Hill's Erica Owens, Northwestern's Mary Kate DuBard and Emily Smith and Fort Mill's Ashley Potts and Tiayonna Blackmon have legitimate shots at winning individual state titles.
In the Class AAAA boys meet, Clover's Mick Francis, Northwestern's Patrick Cunningham and three pole vaulters -- Lancaster's Timothy Boling, South Pointe's Terry Squibbs and Northwestern's Spencer Cote -- made the field of eight.
Chester is the only Class AAA team in The Herald's circulation area but has several championship contenders. Micah Wessigner is a good bet in the 800 and 1,600 and Shakita Davis in both hurdles. Terrell Springs and Devin Jackson are threats in the sprints.
Class A's top hopes are Indian Land's Wes Scott and Joel Sinnett in the distance races.
