Dorman's OT strike sends Fort Mill home

ROEBUCK -- The Fort Mill girls soccer season ended abruptly Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Upper State playoffs. Dorman's Aubrey Danielson scored on a long direct kick in sudden death to knock Fort Mill out, 1-0.

Dorman, ranked No. 2 in the state, will play Monday for a shot to advance to the Friday's state finals.

The Lady Yellow Jackets played to a scoreless tie through 80 minutes of regulation. They fought off Dorman's attacks through two 10-minute overtimes.

The loss was the first for Fort Mill since the second game of the season. The Jackets finish 18-3-3 overall and ranked No. 4 after winning their region title with a perfect 12-0 mark.

The quarterfinal defeat is the third straight for the Jackets. They made it to the state finals in 2005. That was what the seniors on this team were aiming for this year.

Fort Mill coach Jim Finnerty was calm, dignified and appreciative of his team after the game. He did his best to comfort his players, most of whom were hugging each other while wiping away tears.

"We prepared all year to play the best teams in the state," Finnerty said. "It was a good game. It doesn't matter that we have lost in the same round three straight years. If we had lost in the finals this year, it wouldn't be any different. We gave it our all, we gave great effort."

Dorman (21-1-1) outshot Fort Mill 17-10 for the match. The Lady Cavaliers attacked over and over but were unable to get clean shots. Fort Mill collapsed on the ball time and time again.

The winning shot came from about 30 yards out. No defense was going to prevent it from going in the goal.

Dorman coach Josef Lorenz said he wanted to see a floater to see if Fort Mill's keeper, Alexis McLaine, would come out after it.

"I thought (McLaine) would make the stop and we might have a chance at a rebound or a drop," Lorenz said.

Instead, Danielson floated the ball in a perfect spot -- too high for McLaine to get a hand on it before it slipped under the crossbar into the goal.

"Fort Mill is an outstanding squad. The back four really close on the ball. (Ashleigh) Sheets is dangerous with the ball. They are the best team we've seen this season," Lorenz said.

Fort Mill is a young team with six freshmen, eight sophomores and a junior. Still, the loss will sting for the eight seniors who have now played their final high school game.

"Defensively we were set up correctly," Finnerty said. "It was just one of those good balls that you cannot save."
