ROEBUCK -- Northwestern made history Saturday night in its 4-1 victory over No. 6 Dorman. The Trojans advanced to the Upper State finals for the sixth consecutive season and forward Enzo Martinez scored two goals, breaking the South Carolina career scoring record, according to Trojans coach Dom Wren.Entering Northwestern's quarterfinal match with Dorman, Martinez had 140 total goals, trailing former Andrew Jackson star Kyle Izzard by a single goal.
Northwestern took to the road for the first time in the 2008 postseason, but the venue mattered little as the Trojans took control early on Dorman's pristine field.
Martinez wasted little time tying the record, scoring less than four minutes into the game. The goal was the second straight game Northwestern jumped ahead in the opening minutes, mirroring a goal by Jeremy Dobbins in the Trojans' second-round matchup with Lexington.
The opening goal was special, as Martinez slipped it by the goalie from 35 yards out. Dorman never recovered.
Dobbins added to his playoff total with the second goal of the game, but the Trojans really put the Cavaliers behind the 8-ball in the waning minutes of the opening half.
As is customary in soccer, the scoreboard stopped with 2:00 remaining in the half as the refs kept the official time on the field. The Trojans fended off a Dorman threat, and quickly advanced the ball downfield.
Martinez saved the ball from going out of bounds on the right side and found his brother Alex Martinez streaking across the middle. Alex crushed it past Cavalier keeper Zach Woolever, giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead at the break and all but ensuring a win.
Dorman scored its only goal early in the second half, the first goal allowed by the Trojans in the postseason. After the initial threat, the Cavaliers could not get any closer.
With the game essentially decided, all that remained in question was when Enzo Martinez would set the record.
He had several good looks, but twice sailed the ball wide left and once was stopped by Woolever.
Martinez finally picked up the goal with just over five minutes remaining, on an unassisted shot from the right side.
Martinez Immediately ran to the Trojan contingent that had made its way to Roebuck for the game, where he was joined by teammates who celebrated his accomplishment.
With the record behind him and a spot in the Upper State finals in the bag, Martinez was all smiles after the game.
"There are so many people who made tonight possible for me," said Martinez. "From coaches and teachers to my girlfriend and our great fans, everyone has been so supportive. Most of all, it is these boys, what a great group of teammates."
Wren was proud of his star, but reiterated that the Trojans still have much left on the table on the season.
"Tonight was a great win," said Wren, "and we are all very exited for Enzo. We also know that tonight was just one piece of the puzzle. We did an excellent job of not looking past tonight; our boys have been mentally tough all season. We have a lot of experience on this team.
"Getting ahead early was crucial and really took a lot of the pressure off, but at the same time, we told our kids at halftime that we were not playing our best soccer despite our 3-0 lead. We responded well and kept up the pressure the entire second half."
The Trojans advance to face the winner of the Irmo/Greenwood matchup with a spot in the state championship game on the line. Northwestern defeated Greenwood 5-0 earlier in the season, but has not faced Irmo this season.
Should it advance, Northwestern has a shot to face rival Spring Valley for the title. The Trojans lost 2-1 to Spring Valley earlier in the season, but don't expect the Trojans to look ahead.
"There is no other team I'd rather face in the finals than Spring Valley," said Martinez, "but we know we have to get there first. In the playoffs, one bad game and you're done, we don't want to fall into that trap."
