closeLANCASTER The Lancaster Bruins gave coach Bennie McMurray his birthday wish with a convincing win over cross county rival Andrew Jackson, 31-6 on Friday.
The Bruins did it on the ground with 100-plus-yard performances from tailback Zed Truesdale and quarterback Matt Reese. Truesdale racked up 143 yards on 15 carries with two touchdowns to lead the way, while Reese ran a new-look option offense and carried 15 times for 108 yards.
The Bruins drew first blood on a 6-yard run by Truesdale to cap a six-play, 49-yard drive. Anna Funderburk tacked on the first of her four PATs and Lancaster led 7-0 midway through the first quarter.
Neither team was able to do much the rest of the half, but Lancaster exploded to start the third quarter when Truesdale broke free off left tackle for a 65-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.
The Volunteers got on the board on Lancasters next possession when Reese missed a read and threw right into the hands of Kevin Adams, who returned it untouched 40 yards for the touchdown. The PAT was wide right, and Lancaster led it 14-6.
Andrew Jackson went three-and-out and the Bruins took advantage when Brion Struthers returned the punt 40 yards to the Andrew Jackson 18. Three plays later, Marco Wylie took it 7 yards off tackle to make it 21-6.
The Bruins got two more scores to cap off the night with a Funderburk 21-yard field goal and when Reese connected with Michael Catoe on a 7-yard scoring strike.
