Panthers able to retain draft class

- Darin Gantt

CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers were able to retain their entire 2008 draft class, after defensive tackle Nick Hayden and offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz cleared waivers and were signed to the practice squad.

Also signed to the squad were running back DeCori Birmingham, wide receiver William Buchanon and safety Joe Fields. They have three more spots they're expected to fill today.

Keeping Hayden nearby was a key, since they're still thin on the interior line, with just Gary Gibson and veteran Darwin Walker in reserve. Schwartz may end up a guard someday, but his size and strength made them want to keep him.

Otherwise, it was a slow day for the Panthers, as they announced no other active roster moves. Defensive end Stanley McClover, cut Saturday, was claimed off waivers by Houston.
