FORT MILL -- Fort Mill's roster has Ashleigh Sheets listed as a defender. The truth is, she can and will play wherever coach Jim Finnerty needs her on the field. She is the type of player that changes games.

Sheets is a senior who will head to the U.S. Naval Academy in a few months. She lined up at forward in Wednesday's match against No. 14 North Augusta in the second round of the playoffs.

She scored a decisive goal early to help lead the Lady Jackets to a 2-0 win. Fort Mill, ranked No. 4 in the state at 18-2-3, will play at Dorman on Friday. North Augusta finished the season at 15-6.

Sheets said she started the season as a defender. Fort Mill dropped the first two games of the year to Hilton Head and Dutch Fork. Finnerty moved her up to kick-start the offense.

Fort Mill hasn't lost since.

Sheets and her teammates made it to the state championship game in 2005. The Jackets have been knocked out in the quarterfinals the last two years. She'd like to get back to the finals.

Finnerty met with the seniors prior to the game.

"He wanted us to think about how hard we have worked for this; how many times we've practiced in the rain; how many times we thought we hated him for making us work," Sheets said with a wide grin.

Sheets got a nice leading pass from Kaitlyn Marr about 30 yards out in the game's eighth minute. She dribbled to her right into the box, stopped, then fired a shot off her left foot over the goalkeeper for a 1-0 edge.

"It was kind of a chip shot. I noticed (North Augusta goal keeper Jordan Hart) was up off the line so I wanted to go over her head," Sheets explained.

"Our game plan was to come out and score early, show them we wanted it more than they did," she said.

Freshman Ashton Wolfe scored just before the intermission. She also went high over Hart to bury a shot into the left corner from 19 yards out to give Fort Mill its 2-0 advantage.

North Augusta's best scoring opportunity came in the 15th minute. Laura Mottel, the team's leading scorer, unleashed a shot from the left side that smashed off the crossbar, then rebounded harmlessly to the far side of the field. Mottel was held in check the rest of the way.

North Augusta coach Hank Deer said Fort Mill did a great job defensively.

"They are extremely organized in the back. They do a great job at midfield. Their closing speed is fantastic," Deer said.

"We had some chances to slot the ball, but Fort Mill was able to get back and shape their defense. They are a quality, quality team. They are well-coached and have exceptional field intelligence."

Finnerty is looking forward to facing Dorman. He said his team is playing well, at times.

"We are looking very strong but I'd hesitate to say we are playing our best soccer. Friday is going to be a very good game," Finnerty said.
