Coaches Brandt, Roberts step down

Spring sports are over for all but Northwestern's boys soccer team, and with the end comes a bit of sad news.

Two coaches have decided to hang it up -- Rock Hill boys soccer coach Lorne Brandt and South Pointe softball coach Lance Roberts.

Both will still teach at their schools and Brandt will continue to do a fine job with Rock Hill's Web site. Roberts will continue to coach the Stallions' ninth-grade football team.

Brandt coached the team for eight seasons.

"Stepping down was a tough decision, but I decided to focus on personal goals by working towards my own education and teaching practices," Brandt said. "I will continue to manage to support the boys.

"I am assisting the administration by searching for a replacement coach. These are some great players and even better kids. The next coach will have a fortunate start at Rock Hill High School."

Roberts was hired as the school's first softball coach three years ago when the school opened. He came from Chester, where he built the Lady Cyclones into one of Class AAA's top teams.

Family first is the reason Roberts is giving up softball. His oldest son, Grant, will play on South Pointe's varsity soccer team next season as a sophomore and Roberts wants to be there cheering for him and the team.

"Grant was on the JV team this year and I got to see only two games," Roberts said. "I gave this a lot of thought, but in the end, I felt I needed to be there for Grant and watch him play. It was a tough choice, but I'm doing the right thing."

• NEXT: The newspaper business is a lot like golf.

In golf, if you have a bad hole, there's always the next, unless you're on No. 18.

If you get something wrong in the newspaper, you get a chance to fix it the next day. A good example relates to Northwestern soccer player Enzo Martinez.

We missed a Martinez goal and said he needed two to tie the state record for career goals and three to break it going into last Saturday's game against Dorman. He actually needed one to tie and two to break the mark of 141 held by former Andrew Jackson star Kyle Izzard.

Martinez scored twice in Northwestern's 4-1 win over Dorman and became the career leader with 142 goals.

Thanks to Northwestern assistant principal and former soccer coach Ozzie Ahl, we got it right in Sunday's story.

• 'CATS WRESTLING: Rock Hill High's wrestling team had its awards night at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill and honored its squad, which was the Class AAAA state runner-up to Summerville.

The Bearcats were 29-3 under first-year coach Cain Beard. He and his staff also recognized and handed out awards to his junior varsity wrestlers.

The most outstanding varsity wrestler award went to brothers Chad and Weston Beck, who won individual state titles. A.J. Boyd was named the most outstanding JV wrestler.

Special recognition was given to assistant coaches Ryan Whitmore, Justin Williams, Dan Davis and Paul Iavonne, and to supporter Gary Partlow for his tireless efforts for the Bearcats.
