They call it the Weekend of Champions, and both the Clover Blue Eagles and the Chester Cyclones will be part of it.
Clover meets Beaufort at 8 p.m. today, in Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia for the Class AAAA Division II football championship. Then, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Chester will go up against Wilson for the Class AAA title.
Clover is making its second trip to the state championships. The Blue Eagles are playing the same team they lost to in 1945, the last time they made it to the finals.
Chester will play in the title game Saturday for the first time since 1963, when the Cyclones beat Eau Claire.
Never miss a local story.
We hope both teams come home with trophies. But we remind them that, whatever the results, this has been a great season, and both teams have played like champions.
The chance to play at Williams-Brice Stadium for a state title will be a memorable event for all involved, not only on the field but also in the stands or listening to the game back home. Here's hoping both teams are at the top of their games and return as state champs.
Go Blue Eagles! Go Cyclones!
Two area teams will vie for state championships in games tonight and Saturday.
