County needs new nursing home
A long time ago, about a dozen people wanted to build a hospital in Fort Mill. Now, it looks like no one is going to build. With all the growth in Fort Mill, Indian Land, Tega Cay, we need it now.
We also need a nursing home or two. If you have to go to Charlotte or somewhere else, it's a lot of time and money wasted.
Never miss a local story.
Sleep isn't the only issue
This is in response to the editorial "Kids need their sleep." As a mother of two elementary school children, I will say that I agree with Superintendent Lynn Moody. However, lack of sleep can not be separated from a need for children to receive proper nutrition (and physical activity).
I cannot count the number of times my children have come home from school with candy and remnants of cupcakes from a classroom. They are often rewarded with pizza parties, ice cream or popsicles for meeting goals. It has long been proven that artificial flavors, colors and preservatives, not to mention the refined sugar contained in these foods have a direct effect on a child's ability to be ready and receptive to learning.
I am in no way a "purist" and allow occasional treats. However, in doing the math -- 180 days of school, parties for birthdays (as many as 25 per class), holiday celebrations, rewards for good behavior, etc. -- it becomes more than just an occasional treat at school!
Thank you to Superintendent Moody for making a case for enough sleep, but proper sleep goes hand in hand with proper nutrition (and physical activity).
Were mistakes covered by insurers?
Over the last month, I have read several articles about the company that had managed the "Pennies for Progress" funds. This company, Capital Management and Engineering, has made several mistakes.
I would think that any mistake this company made was covered by their bonding company. So if the $2.5 million error they made is covered by insurance, then County Manager Jim Baker and York County residents have nothing to worry about regarding this amount, right?
