Judgment counts in a real leader
I read the recent "To the Contrary" commentary by York County GOP Chairman Glenn McCall with a great deal of consternation and disdain, therefore, compelling me to respond.
Allow me first of all to state that I am a black registered Democrat who does not always vote a straight-party ticket or follow the party line if I disagree. I would have proudly voted for Colin Powell had he chosen to run for president. I am also a very, very, proud American who served his country and would do so now if necessary to preserve the ideals we represent as a nation for my grandchildren.
Mr. McCall did a lovely job of interspersing his own opinions with what seems to be the party line of the party he represents. I hope this was not an attempt to shrewdly direct attention to his candidate for president.
Never miss a local story.
Finally, a number of historians will tell you that character and judgment may be better than experience to become effective as a leader. The president of the United States should be held to extremely high standards, regardless of his background.
So, Mr. McCall, life is a journey, with the question being: Does the journey create the person, or does the person create the journey? Give Barack Obama some respect as he creates this journey to a place where we have never been before.

New license may mean new glasses
Paul Revere needs to jump on his horse and warn the people that the British are coming and that they are coming from the direction of the South Carolina motor vehicle driver's license division.
Recent forms to be used to acquire new driver's licenses require our citizens to obtain a professional eye doctor examination at the expense of the citizen.
Is there a dead cat on the line and is that dead cat the optometrist lobbyist playing golf with the head of the S.C. motor vehicle division?
If this is the work of our elected representatives, I want just one representative to step forward and volunteer the South Carolina state government to pay for this examination and the possible set of new eyeglasses. If the lobbyist is behind this, people can bet their bottom dollar a new set of glasses will be prescribed.
How can our many thousands now drawing unemployment benefits, our seniors on fixed income or the common family with one paycheck on minimum wages expect to be able to pay for such a fiasco when two loaves of bread and a gallon of milk now cost $10 -- if the citizen has the $4 to pay for the gas to go to the grocery store?
These are hard times and for our state government, and to require this of the people is a heartless and cruel venture designed to take food from children's mouths. A new set of glasses would wipe out two unemployment checks and in some cases a entire Social Security check.

Democratic Party represents equality
I am a Democrat because this party represents, by vote, my philosophy of equality of rights, opportunities and fair treatment for all people. I am party oriented rather than personality oriented.
How do the Hillaryites figure? What's wrong with this picture?
Get over it! Humble yourselves by moving from the egos and vote for the party. Vote Obama-Biden.
Woe is me. Societies ruled by the ego have not fared well historically. Babylon and Pompeii. We still need change. This time, think and vote change. Vote for life, not death. Vote Obama-Biden.
