Hundreds of people already have visited the new veterans memorial at Rock Hill's Glencairn Garden even though it was unveiled less than a week ago. That reflects both the success of the new memorial and the reverence area residents have for the dedication and sacrifice of our veterans.
A number of those veterans were present at Friday's dedication of the memorial, which features large bronze plaques commemorating each branch of the service — Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. The veterans in the crowd ranged from the grizzled warriors of World War II and Korea to the newly minted vets of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Many also came to honor fathers who had served, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, friends and classmates. The band played and moving speeches were made, but we suspect many were caught up in their own thoughts and memories.
Those thoughts no doubt were enhanced by the simple majesty of the memorial and the natural tranquility of Glencairn, an oasis in the middle of the city's historic downtown. It is a fitting place to memorialize the sacrifice of those who answered their nation's call in time of need.
This memorial is a stunning addition to the garden. It is part of an ambitious project to expand Glencairn and ensure that it remains a key focal point in the community for generations to come.
The gracefully curving wall of the memorial now will be an iconic landmark in the city as well.
The scores of veterans at Friday's ceremonies were just a few of the thousands of veterans in the region. While we are proud to pay tribute to them today on the official Veterans Day, we hope the commitment to honor their service extends well beyond this day.
In some ways, we have failed our veterans. We have sent them into the heat of battle with inadequate equipment. When they return, we have failed to provide them with the health care services they deserve. We often have failed to recognize the psychological wounds exacted by war. Those are the wounds that can claim lives long after the battle has ended.
Tomorrow, after the last notes of the band music have faded, and the next day and the day after that, we must remain steadfast in ensuring that our veterans have the care and resources they need to resume life as civilians. That truly s the way to show our gratitude.
Today, though, one Veterans Day, we salute all those who answered the call, who left the comforts of home to confront our enemies. Thanks to them for their service.
