New veterans' garden

A number of cities in York County, including Fort Mill and York, have striking memorials to veterans of the nation's wars. Soon, Rock Hill will join the ranks with a veterans' memorial of its own.

The planned memorial, a tall, curving brick wall with arches, emblems and a plaque honoring the five branches of the military, will be the focal point of an addition to Glencairn Garden. The new garden, now an empty field on Edgemont Avenue, will include grassy plazas from which to view the memorial and hold ceremonies honoring veterans. Of course, it will include trees, shrubs, flowers and other landscaping.

Located across the creek from the entrance on Edgemont, the new garden is just one of many ambitious changes and additions to historic Glencairn. Other planned additions include two showcase gardens near the Bigger House and three ponds and a wheelchair-accessible ramp along the fountain area. Construction is expected to begin in the next few months on those projects, while work on the veterans' garden could begin early next year. Completion is scheduled for 2010.

We are grateful the city soon will have a veterans' memorial -- and one that is certain to be both breathtaking and moving. Congratulations to landscape architect Howell Beach, who designed the memorial garden, and to all involved in this worthy project.
